Using the spreadsheet: Unlike the Digital Source & Printer Resolution spreadsheet, this one indicates the maximum feasible print-size from a given source. The sizes listed under “Printed Output...” indicate the point at which the combined theoretical resolving-power of the film and the final print simply run out of puff - print any bigger than this and you’ve gone beyond the point at which the negative can yield more information. The resolution figures quoted for film and print assume the finest possible media, processed perfectly at all stages - any change (fast film, exhausted chemicals etc.) will degrade the results and further limit the useful maximum size. The only adjustments you might wish to make to this spreadsheet are the default figures for film & print resolution - they were taken as an “optimistic average” from a variety of sources, so feel free to change them to reflect your own setup. |
